2010  Paddle Canada Training Courses

Paddle Canada (formerly the Canadian Recreational Canoeing Association) is a national association representing 2.3 million recreational paddlers as well as acting as the national office for ten provincial and three territorial associations. Its training programs are first rate and Canoe Hill Adventures is pleased to offer both Paddle Canada Flatwater Kayaking Skills, and Paddle Canada Level 1 Sea Kayaking . These fully certified  courses are fun and informative and  include a lot of practical application.

If you feel like you may have an interest in sea kayaking but not quite ready to take a Paddle Canada course, Canoe Hill Adventures will also be holding shorter introductory clinics throughout the summer of 2010. Contact us or keep an eye on our website for these dates.

If you have an interest in any of our training  please fill out the course interest form below or just simply send us an e-mail . We will then contact you with the details.

After enjoying a guided tour or two, you've decided that perhaps you'd like to do your own thing once in a while. You want to be safe and learn some basic skills so you can look after yourself, and those you are paddling with.

This full-day course is for beginners, with little or no previous experience, who plan to be out only on very calm days, in locations with frequent and easy landing zones, and paddling in company with similarly trained individuals.

We will spend our on-water time going over such skills as forward and reverse strokes, draws, sweeps, rescues, and braces. Off the water we will discuss various kayaking topics.
  • Course Dates:  July 31, 2010
  • Location: Lewisporte
  • Prerequisites: None
  • Includes: Kayak and accessories, course materials, group equipment and Paddle Canada certification.
  • Cost: $120.00 per person, 3 to 6 students.

Navigating from a sea kayak presents many disadvantages when compared to what you can do aboard a larger vessel. You can't spread out large charts easily, radar and depth sounder are impossible, or at least very impractical, and the use of other tools awkward at best. What you do have access to are a watch, compass, and handheld GPS units. We will show you how to use these tools so you arrive where you expected to.

Taking place over Friday evening and all day Saturday at our Lawrence's Harbor facilities, accommodations, kayaks and some meals are included. This is a condensed course, covering just the bare essentials to get you started. As with any new skill, it will take practice to become proficient. That is why we include an on-the-water session where you can begin to work with your new knowledge.

Topics covered include: compass basics, map and chart reading, tides and currents, planning a course, bearings and fixes, time/speed/distance calculations, and using a GPS.
  • Course Date: TBA
  • Prerequisites: Paddle Canada Flatwater Kayaking Skills or higher/equivalent
  • Cost: $180.00 per person, 5 to 6 students
